Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts: A Journey from Dream to Reality

In 2014, I joined the Dr. Phillips Center project, a dream in the making for over 25 years. As the creative director, I led a team responsible for crafting the Center’s visual identity, from digital displays to menus and the website. It was an exciting and challenging launch project, requiring creativity within challenging budget constraints.

Building the Vision:

Two key obstacles stood before us: visualizing a non-existent building and managing costs. We addressed both by creating a “sizzle reel” showcasing diverse artists in various stages filmed in a donated studio. This footage became the foundation for promotional materials, saving significant costs.

Launching the Dream:

We produced various creative assets throughout the year, including commercials, a documentary capturing the community’s artistic spirit, and “Focus On Local” short films highlighting local artists. These efforts generated significant buzz and awareness within the community. In fact, the achievements were remarkable.

A Year of Success:

The Dr. Phillips Center’s first year exceeded expectations in every aspect. Attendance, revenue, and membership soared, and the programming was diverse and high-quality. The creative team I built continues to thrive, and I am deeply grateful for being part of this remarkable, beautiful building that will be so important for many generations to come.

The Center’s Legacy:

Today, the Dr. Phillips Center stands as a cultural landmark, exceeding its initial vision. It’s a vibrant hub for international, national, and local artists, offering diverse performances, educational programs, and community outreach initiatives. The Center’s impact extends beyond the stage, revitalizing Orlando’s identity and generating economic benefits.

Looking Forward:

The future holds even more promise with the opening of Judson’s, a space for intimate performances, further diversifying the Center’s offerings. With its commitment to artistic excellence, inclusivity, and community engagement, the Dr. Phillips Center is poised to continue its meteoric rise as a national cultural powerhouse.

A Personal Note:

Witnessing the Center’s evolution fills me with immense pride. It’s a testament to countless individuals’ dedication and a living example of the transformative power of art. The Dr. Phillips Center is more than bricks and mortar; it’s a beacon of hope and a symbol of Orlando’s cultural renaissance. While I was there, we produced a series of short films that focused on the local artists in the community. Below is one of them. It is the scope of this project from global to extremely personal that makes this space so human. It is a place that truly values #artsforeverylife.
